On Human-AI mediation

Human-AI mediation and why it matters

In the evolving landscape of AI, generative technologies like ChatGPT are reshaping not only how we work, but how we experience work itself. As AI becomes more integrated into our daily tasks, it subtly alters our perceptions, relationships, and even our identities. But what happens when the stories we tell, the knowledge we consume, and the decisions we make are mediated by machines rather than human agency?

I have written a paper in which I dive into the complexities of AI’s influence on the workplace, guided by a post-phenomenological framework. By understanding how AI reshapes our engagement with reality, we can better navigate its profound implications on employee well-being, productivity, and organizational culture. The question isn't just how AI will change work—it’s how AI is already changing the way we are at work.

This paper takes a post-phenomenological approach to examine the multifaceted ways AI mediates human experiences in the workplace. It introduces a framework that categorizes human-AI interaction into four key domains: contextual mediation, interactive mediation, identity dispossession, and the reshaping of reality.

From the biases embedded in AI systems to the emotional and cognitive effects they have on users, AI doesn't just augment tasks—it transforms the very fabric of our work lives. It can lead to a sense of estrangement, as employees increasingly turn to AI for guidance, risking a detachment from their own creativity and decision-making. These dynamics reveal a deeper shift in how we understand agency, trust, and authenticity in the workplace, urging us to reconsider the role of AI in shaping our professional identities and social interactions.
